Cowboy Style Chicken Fried Steak

Hey Hey! Is everyone excited for the weekend? I know we are over here! So..what is 'Cowboy Style' Chicken Fried Steak you ask? I didn't know either until a few months ago. I was searching google images for something when I came across a picture of it and was curious so I clicked on it and I guess it's something that a small joint here in Dallas has, now I haven't done any research to see if it's a popular thing anywhere, and it must not even be that popular in Dallas seeing how I, nor my husband who's a native, had ever heard of it. I don't remember the name of the place that serves it, but it was a pretty simple looking dish, a piece of chicken fried steak, smothered in chili and cheese - umm, yes please, sign me up! I knew I had to make this at home, and for some reason, the thing that came to my mind to serve it with was tater tots! You've got to try this delicious spin on a classic..you will not be disappointed!

Ingredients:
2-4 Pieces Cube Steak (all depending on how many servings you need)
1 Can Chili with No Beans (Wolf brand is preferred in this house!)
1 Heaping Cup Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese, shredded
2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
2 Cups plus 1/2 Cup Buttermilk
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Onion Powder
1/2 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
1 Teaspoon Black Pepper
Vegetable Oil, for frying
-
Directions:
Place steaks in a bowl and pour 2 cups of buttermilk over them and let set for about 20 minutes. Season your flour with your spices and mix well, then drizzle in the 1/2 cup of buttermilk and mix into the flour to form little clumps that will stick to the steak and make it extra crunchy. Once your steak is done sitting in the buttermilk, take it piece by piece and coat it in the flour, then place it in a frying pan that's been heated with about and inch inch 1/2 of oil. Cook on each side about 6 minutes, or until done to your likeness. Drain your steaks and then move to a serving plate and spoon on heated up chili and sprinkle on cheese.

  7. Made this tonight for my hubby and he gobbled it down! He's from a small town outside of Houston and he's never heard of topping it with chili and cheese but it was a huge hit!! I've had so much trouble getting the breading to stick to my cube steaks and turn out crispy but your recipe made them come out perfect!! I'm so thankful I came across your blog!
